Origin and Habitat

The Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia, commonly known as the Lapis tetra, is a small freshwater fish native to Brazil. It inhabits calm tributaries and forest streams where the water is often tinted by tannins released from fallen leaves and roots. In such environments, the water is soft, acidic, and slightly dark, creating ideal conditions for this delicate species.

Aquarium Care

In aquariums, this species thrives when kept in groups of at least eight to ten individuals. A planted tank with roots, leaves, and dim lighting helps to replicate its natural habitat, while clean, soft, and slightly acidic water is essential for its well-being. Frequent partial water changes also play an important role in keeping them healthy and active.

Feeding

Feeding the Lapis tetra is straightforward, as it readily accepts high-quality flakes, micro-pellets, as well as frozen and live foods such as daphnia or mosquito larvae. A varied diet not only keeps them in good health but also enhances their coloration.

Breeding and Lifespan

Breeding can be achieved under controlled conditions, as these tetras scatter their eggs among plants without showing parental care. The eggs hatch within a few days, and the fry begin swimming freely soon after. Although delicate, with proper care Hyphessobrycon cyanotaenia can live for three to five years, making it a rewarding choice for aquarists who appreciate subtle beauty and natural schooling behavior.

Physical Characteristics

Gobioides peruanus has a long, slender body that resembles an eel more than a typical goby. It can grow up to 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) in length. The fish has a soft, scaleless body with a broad, flattened head and a large mouth, which it uses to sift through mud and sand for food. Its coloration tends to be grayish or brownish, helping it blend into the muddy bottoms of its habitat.

One of the most distinctive features of Gobioides peruanus is its reduced or absent dorsal fin spines and its fused pelvic fins, forming a disc-like structure typical of gobies. This helps the fish maintain stability on the soft substrate of estuarine environments.

Habitat and Behavior

This species thrives in estuaries, mangroves, and tidal creeks, where salinity levels vary. Gobioides peruanus is a benthic species, meaning it spends most of its time at the bottom of the water column. It prefers muddy or sandy substrates and often burrows into the sediment to hide from predators or to ambush prey.

The diet of Gobioides peruanus mainly consists of small invertebrates, organic detritus, and microorganisms. It plays an important ecological role by helping to recycle nutrients in the benthic zone.

Reproduction and Lifecycle

Like many gobies, Gobioides peruanus lays eggs that adhere to the substrate or sheltered surfaces. The male typically guards the eggs until they hatch. Juveniles go through a planktonic phase before settling into a benthic lifestyle.

Conservation Status

There is limited specific data on the conservation status of Gobioides peruanus, but it is not currently listed as endangered. However, habitat degradation, pollution, and changes in water salinity due to human activities pose potential threats to its environment.

Keeping in an Aquarium 

This species is relatively easy to care for if provided with the right conditions:

• A tank of at least 50 liters (13 gallons) with plenty of hiding spots among rocks.
• Clean, well-oxygenated water with moderate flow.
• Temperature between 18–24°C (64–75°F), reflecting its natural habitat.
• A sandy or fine gravel substrate, ideal for its natural behavior.

It is a territorial fish, so it is best kept in small groups with many hiding places to prevent aggression between males.

Feeding and Behavior 

Rhinogobius sp. "Red White Edge" is a carnivore that prefers small live or frozen foods, such as:

• Artemia, daphnia, cyclops
• Finely chopped shrimp or bloodworms

This species often stays near the bottom, searching for food among rocks. Its activity and interactions with other fish in the tank make it fascinating to observe.

Interesting Fact 
Many Rhinogobius species exhibit diverse reproductive strategies – some are amphidromous (larvae develop in saltwater), while others reproduce entirely in freshwater. There is still little information about breeding this particular species in aquariums, making it an exciting challenge for experienced fishkeepers looking to attempt captive breeding.

Batrachomoeus trispinosus prefers muddy or sandy substrates in shallow estuaries and coastal environments, where it blends into its surroundings using excellent camouflage. It is an ambush predator, feeding primarily on small fish and invertebrates, which it catches with a sudden gulp using its wide, cavernous mouth.

Notable for its ability to produce grunting or croaking sounds, the toadfish uses specialized muscles attached to its swim bladder, often for communication or territorial behavior. While it might appear unassuming, its sharp spines can be used defensively if threatened. The species is an intriguing example of adaptation to benthic marine environments.

These elongated, graceful fish, with their striking black bodies and undulating fins, are often admired in aquariums for their curious behavior and nocturnal nature. Growing up to 50 cm (20 inches), they are known for their ability to navigate their surroundings using weak electrical impulses, which also helps them locate food in low-light conditions. With proper care, they can live for 10 to 15 years in captivity.

Black ghost knifefish thrive in well-maintained aquariums with soft, slightly acidic water. Ideal temperatures range from 23°C to 28°C (73°F to 82°F), with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5. A dimly lit tank with plenty of hiding places like driftwood, rocks, and plants is essential, as these fish are shy and prefer to stay out of bright light. Strong filtration and regular water changes are necessary to maintain optimal water quality, as they are sensitive to poor conditions.

Apteronotus albifrons are generally peaceful but may be territorial with other knifefish or similarly shaped species. They do well in community tanks with non-aggressive fish of similar size. Breeding them in captivity is rare due to their complex needs, but they make a fascinating and relatively low-maintenance addition to a carefully managed tank, where their unique appearance and behaviors can be fully appreciated.

BEHAVIOR
Tetraodon nigroviridis is an intelligent and active fish known for its inquisitive behavior. Unlike many other fish, they exhibit a high level of awareness of their surroundings and even interact with their owners. However, they are not typically community fish; they can be territorial and sometimes aggressive, especially towards other puffers or smaller tank mates. They are best kept in a species-specific tank or with carefully chosen tank mates that are large, robust, and not easily intimidated.

TANK SETUP
A proper tank setup for green spotted puffers must consider their natural habitat. While they can start in freshwater when young, as they mature, they thrive in brackish water conditions. Therefore, a gradual increase in salinity is necessary, eventually reaching a specific gravity of around 1.005 to 1.015. The ideal water temperature ranges from 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F), with a pH of 7.5 to 8.5.

The tank should be spacious, as these puffers are active swimmers and require plenty of room to explore. Including a variety of decorations such as rocks, driftwood, and plants (preferably brackish-tolerant species like Java fern or Anubias) can provide hiding spots and enrichment. A strong filtration system is essential to maintain water quality, as puffers are messy eaters, producing significant waste.

DIET
Green spotted puffers are carnivorous and have a strong appetite for a diet that includes hard-shelled prey, which helps wear down their continuously growing teeth. A varied diet is crucial and can include snails, crabs, shrimp, and other invertebrates, as well as frozen or live foods like bloodworms, mussels, and krill. Offering crunchy foods is essential to prevent their teeth from overgrowing, which can lead to health problems. They may also accept some high-quality pellets designed for carnivorous fish, but these should not be the main part of their diet.

COMPATIBILITY
Due to their semi-aggressive nature, Tetraodon nigroviridis is best housed either alone or with tank mates that can handle their assertiveness. Suitable companions might include larger, brackish-water species like archerfish or certain species of gobies. It's important to monitor any tank mates closely to ensure that the puffer does not harass or injure them.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Green spotted puffers are not beginner fish due to their specific water requirements, dietary needs, and temperamental behavior. Regular monitoring of water parameters is essential, as they are sensitive to poor water quality. Additionally, their teeth need to be regularly checked, as overgrown teeth can prevent them from eating properly. With the right care, these puffers can be long-lived, often living for more than 10 years in captivity.

DISTINGTIVE FEATURES
Altum Angelfish are easily distinguishable from other angelfish species by their tall, elongated bodies and sharply angled dorsal and anal fins. They can reach heights of up to 38 cm (15 inches) from the tip of the dorsal fin to the bottom of the anal fin. Their bodies are typically silver with vertical black stripes, and some specimens exhibit a copper or golden hue, adding to their allure.

HABITAT AND BEHAVIOUR
In the wild, Pterophyllum altum inhabit slow-moving rivers and flooded forests, where the water is soft, slightly acidic, and warm. They are accustomed to densely vegetated environments with plenty of hiding spots, which is essential for their sense of security. Altums are schooling fish and thrive in groups, exhibiting a peaceful demeanor, although they can be territorial, especially during breeding.

AQUARIUM CARE
Caring for Altum Angelfish in captivity can be challenging, primarily due to their specific water quality requirements. They need a large tank, at least 200 liters for a small group, with soft, acidic water (pH between 4.5 and 6.5) and temperatures ranging from 28°C to 30°C. Regular water changes and proper filtration are crucial to maintaining optimal conditions. Additionally, providing plenty of plants and driftwood helps mimic their natural habitat, making them feel at ease.

Feeding Altums is relatively straightforward, as they are omnivorous. A diet consisting of high-quality flake or pellet food, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia, keeps them healthy and vibrant.

Mature males of Channa pulchra exhibit a stunning array of colors, including iridescent blues, greens, and yellows, which are complemented by their sleek, elongated bodies and distinctive markings. Females, while slightly less colorful, still display beautiful patterns and the characteristic sheen that makes this species so appealing. On average, Channa pulchra can grow to a size of 20-25 cm (8-10 inches), although some individuals may reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in optimal conditions.

These snakeheads are known for their territorial nature and intricate social behaviors. Males establish and defend territories, often engaging in captivating displays to ward off rivals or attract females. They thrive in aquariums that replicate their natural environment: slow-moving, shallow waters with ample vegetation, driftwood, and hiding spots. Ideal tank conditions include a sandy or fine gravel substrate, pH levels between 6.5 and 7.5, soft to moderately hard water, and temperatures ranging from 22-28°C.

Channa pulchra is an ambush predator, requiring a diet that reflects its carnivorous tendencies. A varied diet of high-quality live or frozen foods, such as bloodworms, shrimp, and small fish, is recommended to maintain their health and vibrant coloration. They can also be trained to accept pellet foods formulated for carnivorous fish. Ensuring a balanced diet is crucial for their growth and well-being.

Epiplatys dageti, commonly known as the Dageti killifish, is a vibrant freshwater species native to the slow-moving waters of West Africa, particularly Sierra Leone and Liberia. Known for the males' stunning colors, which include bright yellows, oranges, and iridescent blues and greens, this fish is a favorite among aquarists. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with slightly acidic to neutral water and temperatures between 22-26°C (72-79°F). Peaceful yet somewhat territorial, Dageti killifish are fascinating for their surface-dwelling behavior and impressive jumping ability, necessitating a tightly-fitted aquarium lid. Breeding them can be particularly rewarding, as the males' courtship displays and the sight of tiny fry hatching add to their appeal. Despite their beauty and ease of care, their natural habitats face threats from human activities, underscoring the importance of conservation efforts.

The specialty of the Electrophorus electricus are electrical eels (KB05) who are able to create an adult while hunting and defense of electric discharge up to 600V, 0, 5A. I would also recommend you to check  the beautiful Planiloricaria cryptodon (whiptail catfish flounder) with typical tactile whiskers and a long thread at the end of the tail fin.

These are one of the few species originating from Asia. They live in brackish water and as other cichlids need the amount of hiding places in the tank.
